NEED HELP WITH BUILDING YOUR INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS?

At Raven Community Care, we pride ourselves on supporting participants to build on their Independent Living Skills. While the independent living skills required to make it through everyday life are second nature to many, no one is merely born with all of them. For most of us, we pick up on these skills as we grow up. For someone with a disability, this may require a little extra work to gain these skills.

Raven Community Care has designed an Independent Living Skills Assessment which consists of a checklist aligned with each independent living skill. Support workers are then responsible for detailing how the participant has achieved this living skill and whether additional support is required to allow this participant to master this skill.

As part of the Assessment, Participants learn the following skills:

  • How to prepare meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner)

  • Household maintenance (General Cleaning, making your Bed, using a Washing Machine)

  • Financial Support: (Using a Bank Card, understanding what a bank card is used for, purchasing items with the bank card, and Budgeting).

  • Personal Appearance and Hygiene: (Dress yourself, brush your teeth, when to wash your hands, and how to wash yourself).

  • Health: (Can recognize and describe symptoms of colds, flu, and other common health problems).

  • Housing: can identify the type of housing that is within budget and meets current housing needs.

  • Transportation: (Ride a bike, understand seat belt, and understand and catch public transport).

  • Educational Planning: (Has a general idea of what education is needed for the job he/she wants).

  • Job Seeking Skills: (Know what minimum wage is. Can fill out a job form and can write a resume).

  • Emergency and Safety Skills: (knows functions of police, ambulance, and fire department and how to contact them).

  • Knowledge of Community Resources: (Nearest supermarket, shopping district, laundromat, and bank is located).

  • Interpersonal Skills: can identify one friend, and respond to introductions and simple questions.
